Sosekido

The school Sosekido (素石堂) was formed by my sensei, Unkotsu Komine (小峰雲骨) many years ago. I was 13 years old when I first met him, and it was the beginning of my long-time calligraphy path.

New Year’s Card Workshop at the Japanischer Weihnachtsmarkt in Berlin

Last weekend, the 8th and the 9th of December, the Japanischer Weihnachtsmarkt was held at Malzfabrik in Berlin. This is the original Japanese Christmas market and I’ve heard there is always a big queue to enter. But this year, I had been contacted by the organiser and had an opportunity of giving workshops at the event.

We made New Year’s Cards for 2019. Next year is a year of hog (or pig in China). We wrote the word 猪 (hog) in an ancient style letter. After I show them how to write, the children started practicing the letter. Probably it took for 10-15 mins but they were very concentrated and looked at their letters as if they tried to critisise themselves. When they were ready to write on the card, they were very confident. Here are some works.

This is the work of 6-year-old girl.

Her mother offered her a help but she was sure that she could do it.

This boy came up to me and asked many questions before he decided to do.

Every letter he wrote he made a comment until he was satisfied with his strokes.

Very interesting event with good people. If you are around in Berlin next Christmas, it’s recommendable.
