Sosekido

The school Sosekido (素石堂) was formed by my sensei, Unkotsu Komine (小峰雲骨) many years ago. I was 13 years old when I first met him, and it was the beginning of my long-time calligraphy path.

Calligraphy on pottery

Two years ago, I made a collaboration with a German potter, Andreas Münz for a Bonsai Show in Berlin. It was a fun work and we’ve been having a good friendship since then. This year, we have decided to do another collaboration and I visited his workshop this weekend.

He had been investigating the perfect glazing. One of the difficulties we had the last time was the thickness of the glaze. If it’s too thick, the brush doesn’t run and destroy the strokes, which is the beauty of calligraphy. But then if it´s too thin, the glaze is just blown away by the fire or the melt away. This time, after several tests, Andreas had found the very good balance and the temperature for the firing.

These are my works on Andreas’ pots. They look like Korean style Kimchi pots, don’t they? The firing will be soon and I can’t wait to see the result.
