Sosekido

The school Sosekido (素石堂) was formed by my sensei, Unkotsu Komine (小峰雲骨) many years ago. I was 13 years old when I first met him, and it was the beginning of my long-time calligraphy path.

Calligraphy Exhibition from Sosekido, “Moments of Open Eyes” in Berlin

Happy to announce that Sosekido presents our own calligraphy exhibition, “Moments of Open Eyes – 目を開く瞬間”. It´s starting on this Friday, the 6th of November 2015 in Berlin.

Since the summer last year, some new students have joined in my class and we are all excited to have this exhibition. We are very thankful to the gallery, Atelier für Photographie where usually have photography exhibitions for letting us use their space. But, calligraphy is not far from photography if you think about the analogue photography. Back then, you had only one chance to capture the moment. You had to calculate the light, distance, focus and composition. If you miss it, while you were winding, the moment had gone. Calligraphy is the same. Once your brush touches the paper, no going back. You have only one opportunity to write. As well as photography, you need to see the composition before and while you are writing. On top of it, you have to think about the strength of the brush stroke, the amount of the ink and the contrast of the lines. You can try another but it never be the same as before, which is also the same as photography.

As you can see, calligraphy is a lot like photography and we are not hesitated to exhibit in a photography gallery. I hope you find these similarities while looking at our calligraphy works. Moments of open eyes is about the life of the artists. This is where they are at the moment. Or as the Zen philosophy would say, our life keeps passing and we are never be on the same spot. In that case, this is where we were. We are glad to share our moments with you.

The information about the exhibition is available from the gallery´s website.
